The Negative Effect Social Media Has On Your Love Life Is Real When You Are Living Up The Single Life

In a time when much of our communication is handled through experimental or unproven means such as social media and instant messaging, relationships can be anything but simple. In my opinion, having technology at our disposal actually makes it more difficult to enter into a relationship; it’s not uncommon to know a bunch of information about the person you’re pursuing even before you begin dating.

Because of this, we’ve seen an increase in the number of dating apps that have become popular over the past few years, such as Tinder and Bumble. These work for some people, but can inspire such a terrible sense of loneliness in others. If anything, our society has evolved to a point in which people are more likely to feel lonely when they see posts of others having a good time.

For those who aren’t in relationships, Instagram and Twitter can seem like a veritable minefield of content you just don’t want to see. It’s bad enough having to hear your friends talk about their relationships like you care nearly as much as them, and it’s even worse to have to look at cutesy couple pictures and feel jealous of the people within.

At the same time, it’s now much easier to talk to people than it ever was before, especially with DMs. Now, you don’t even have to ask someone for their contact information and face the risk of rejection; as long as the person you want to talk to follows you and vice versa, you can say whatever you want to them. This has had effects both good and bad, as anybody who has had any experience with direct messages can attest.

It’s especially difficult to deal with loneliness in the fall, which is commonly known as “cuffing season”. This is in reference to the approaching winter; generally, people will feel desperate to enter the relationships in the fall or early winter in order to stave off the feelings of loneliness and isolation that dreary, overcast weather can cause. Oftentimes, this can be a great time of year if you’re looking for a relationship.

One of the most important things to remember while you’re dating is that there’s always someone for you out there; no matter how hopeless it might seem sometimes, you can always be sure that eventually, you’ll find someone who cares about you as much as you care for them. For as many dating tips and advice websites as there are out there, few can be relied upon to steer you in the right direction.

At the same time, it’s nice being able to access the internet in order to more easily speak to people or meet them. Sometimes, you can even find someone you really like. I’ve definitely been able to attribute the internet to helping me meet people, even if it isn’t the sole reason I met them. Sometimes, however, it’s too easy to see what your friends are up to and blind yourself with comparisons.

Learning how to not compare yourself to others is one of the most important aspects inherent in your transition to maturity. It can seem impossible to be yourself when everyone is constantly posting about their own lives and trying to set a standard, but it’s up to you to set your own standards through your behavior and actions.

Luckily, the internet also offers a good place for the single people of the world to come together in some form of self-help. Even if it seems like a pity party sometimes, message boards and discussion threads can offer good advice. If you’re ever feeling down about yourself, simply enter a search as to what your issue is and you’ll no doubt find dozens of individuals who are experiencing the same difficulty and want to talk about it.

Relatable content and memes might not seem very therapeutic, but in actuality they can help your relate to the plights that other’s face, thus creating a sense of empathy that can help you get through hard times. I know when I’ve been depressed before, a quick scroll through the internet has managed to turn my mood around a bit. That’s why I thought it would be a good idea to find some of the best content the internet has to offer in terms of being single. You’re welcome!

This one right here would probably work to sum up a lot of people’s relationship difficulties. Whenever you’re single for a long period of time, it may often feel as though you’ve been placed under some kind of spell from an evil entity. What kind of terrible witch or wizard would curse you to not be in a relationship, though? That’s a big NOYB as far as I’m concerned; not even Voldemort himself is evil enough to instill such a pain.

One of the best ways to play off being single when you’re being asked annoying questions at family gatherings or are pressured by your friends to go on a date is to just use sarcasm or humor. Nobody can make fun of you if you find the humor in a situation that you, yourself are a part of, right? That’s a good strategy to deflect any kind of conversation you don’t want to have: just make a joke about something. (Disclaimer: there are certain conversations that you should not end with jokes.)

Here’s one for all the record fans out there. Really, though, who needs a boo when you could just listen to your favorite artist and cry all day? That’s really the way to do it, as far as I’m concerned. Frank Ocean is the perfect artist to whittle away your lonely nights listening to, but you can never go wrong with listening to The Shins when you feel down.

Again, we have humor to save the day. These single/taken checkbox memes are pretty popular, thanks to websites like Tumblr, and I think they’re pretty funny. Self-deprecation isn’t necessarily the best way to deal with your problems, but as long as you use it jokingly you should be alright. It’s good to humor yourself, but not to the point of loathing.

This one is pretty “meta” as they say. It’s a single person meme about single people memes, and it captures the infinite loop of internet humor to a T. I’m sure we’ve all sat in this position in bed before, mourning some kind of relationship or other depressing attribute while we clutch our phones mere inches from our faces. Suffice to say, it’s not a very comfortable way to lay in bed.

Who needs a partner, anyway? A lot of the time, I’ll see people jumping head first into a relationship just for the sake of dating someone. We all know what happens next: it either ends abruptly or continues for a while, deteriorating both parties’ mental health as they both grow increasingly annoyed with one another. These memes might have some valuable lessons to teach, as it turns out.

Relationships statuses on Facebook are some of the most irritating things ever; I think that’s something we can all agree upon. It’s cool that there’s a public way to find out who’s dating who, but I’ve definitely seen some relationship status posts that have got me in my feelings. Whether that’s a break up or a get together, that always depends.

It shocks me just how relatable some of these images are. I can imagine myself engaging in a conversation similar to this. It doesn’t really even make me upset to admit that. A man needs to have his priorities, after all. Really, who wants to put on pants? Pants are the prisons that keep humans from engaging in the highest forms of self expression. You can only be truly free if you wear shorts, but who’s gonna wear shorts on a dang date?

It goes without saying that food is the greatest lover of all. Not only are they compassionate, but they always keep you coming back. Even if you’re eating a food, that food will still remain faithful and loyal to you. How many people would be able to do that and also taste like chocolate? No one. That’s your answer. No one. You have the fridge and that’s all you need.

I like this one because it’s all about self-empowerment. That’s a bit rare to see in today’s competitive dating market. It’s hard to be single, but you have to learn how to function properly without a spouse. There are going to be times in your life when you need that, and during those times you’re going to feel like Wonder Woman or Batman yourself when you realize you don’t need another person to complete your life.

Oftentimes being single can reveal some good qualities about someone. It’s far more difficult to jump into a relationship not knowing what to expect; you could end up wasting your time and happiness for months at a time if you’re with someone you don’t like. Being indecisive can be key. While most people would rate that as a bad quality, being skeptical can definitely have its benefits.

I’ve felt like this while I’ve hung out with my friends who were dating before. Sometimes, you just have to play the role of spectator and ignore the fact that third-wheeling is unpleasant. You’re doing your friends a favor by tagging along for the ride, too. It’s definitely nice to have more people hanging out, even if some people aren’t always as entertained.

If you’ve been a fan of the sarcastic responses we’ve looked at so far, then you’re going to loooooove this one. This is a pretty comical response to the age old expression “Love is in the air.” I mean, what does that even mean? That’s such a cliché too, it’s beyond past time I think we stopped using it. Leave it to Sheldon to dismantle this article so well.

If you really think about it, relationships have pros and cons just like any other life experience. Though it’s nice to have a partner, you also have to consider how nice it can be to have your own things. Your own bed is a big one. And you don’t have to worry about buying two meals every time you go out to eat. That’s a pretty nice deal when you consider how much some couples spend on food for each other.

Finally, we have the nitty gritty reason. Dating is hard. It’s embarrassing, frustrating and often puts people in a bum mood. Life’s all about learning how to love yourself and maturing so that you can be happy with another person. If both people in a relationship aren’t equally mature, that relationship won’t last too long. Be sure to share this article with your friends, whether they’re with someone or not.
