A Bear Wandered Into a Convenience Store—and Calmly Helped Itself to Candy

An unusual customer made a late-night appearance at a 7-Eleven in Olympic Valley, California, leaving a shop clerk stunned. A large black bear casually activated the automatic sliding doors and strolled into the mart, appearing remarkably focused on the snack selection rather than the human present.

Store clerk Christopher Kiesel managed to capture the encounter on his phone. The footage shows the bear standing on its hind legs near the entrance, seemingly unfazed by the high-pitched alarms triggered by the door's sensor. Instead of rummaging through heavy groceries, the animal headed straight for the impulse-buy section.

A Selective Snacker

While bears are often depicted as aggressive scavengers, this particular visitor remained calm and orderly. After browsing the shelves for a few moments, the bear selected a pack of candy. It didn't linger to cause a mess or knock over displays; it simply grabbed its treat and headed back toward the exit.

Kiesel, who recorded the event from a safe distance behind the counter, can be heard in the video attempting to shoo the bear away with verbal commands. The bear ignored the requests, prioritize its chocolate acquisition, and stepped back out into the night.

Living in Bear Country

Incidents like this are becoming increasingly common in the Lake Tahoe region, where bears have become habituated to human presence and the smell of processed food. Local wildlife experts frequently warn residents and business owners to secure doors and trash receptacles, as bears quickly learn where the easiest calories are located.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the encounter, and the store suffered minimal loss—just the cost of a single candy bar. The bear has since become a minor internet sensation, though authorities remind the public that feeding wildlife, even unintentionally, can lead to dangerous situations for both humans and animals.
